Inspiring pupils through enriching STEM initiative

At Riverside Primary School, we are delighted to have become the first primary school within the Lionheart Educational Trust to be accredited with the STEM Learning I Belong programme.

Launched for primary schools at the start of the academic year, the scheme aims to encourage more girls to pursue an interest in computing, which has historically been a male-dominated field.

As part of the programme, a member of staff was required to undertake specific CPD. The I Belong handbook was downloaded, posters were displayed around the school and Mr Matjasz hosted two assemblies for children in Years 2 to 6. The first assembly introduced the children to famous female figures within the STEM industry, while the second focused on programming. Pupils explored real-world concepts, examined instructions (algorithms) and learned about loops (repetition).

Building on this success, plans are underway to expand the project during the spring and summer terms. Specific workshops for pupils in Years 5 and 6 are planned and, if successful, will later be offered to younger year groups.

In addition, a girls-only workshop for pupils in Years 5 and 6 will be run via the Digital Schoolhouse later this year. It will focus on unplugged teaching, programming, and practical activities, including the use of physical computing kits such as Micro:bits.

“I want to encourage the girls in my primary school to be excited about and enthused by computing,” said Mr Matjasz, who led the programme.

“It is really important that girls receive career advice and subject knowledge at this age. It will help them retain their enjoyment of this subject.”
